Dark Chocolate Reduces The Effect Of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome

Raw dark chocolate helps people with CFSThe Nutrition Journal has reported that dark chocolate high in flavanoid content has been shown to reduce the effect of those who suffer from Chronic Fatigue Syndrome (CFS). Outlined for you below is a brief description of what they did and how they were able to measure and determine that dark chocolate reduces the effects of Chronic Fatigue Syndrome. I suffered with CFS for 20+ years and healed naturally with raw organic chocolate. I never understood ‘how or why’ until reading what science shared. It was my ‘explanation’ and it was very humbling to see that reason in writing.

The Method:

“We conducted a double blinded, randomised, clinical pilot crossover study comparing high cocoa liquor / polyphenol rich chocolate (HCL/PR) in comparison to simulated iso-calorific chocolate (cocoa liquor free/ low polyphenols(CLF/LP)) on fatigue and residual function in subjects with chronic fatigue syndrome. Subjects with CFS having severe fatigue of at least 10 out of 11 on the Chalder Fatigue Scale were enrolled. Subjects had either 8 weeks of intervention in the form of HCL/PR or CLF/LP, with a 2 week wash out period followed by 8 weeks of intervention with the other chocolate.”

The Results:

Ten subjects were enrolled in this study and those who ate high flavanoid content chocolate felt significant improvements.  They also noted improvements in depression and found that during the study there was no change in weight of those who participated.

Their Conclusion:

Dark chocolate that is high in flavanoids may improve symptoms of those who are experiencing Chronic Fatigue Syndrome.

    1. Hi Mitchell, thank you for your comment and inquiries. As stated in the Nutrition Journal and their study, “The Chalder Fatigue Scale score improved significantly after 8 weeks of the active high cocoa polyphenol rich chocolate phase, however these scores deteriorated significantly when subjects were given simulated iso-calorific cocoa liquor free/low polyphenol chocolate.” These findings as well as what is documented in many other studies all point to a dark chocolate that is high in polyphenols (flavanoids or plant based antioxidants). I’ve also seen in many studies that science has asked the chocolate makers of the world to list on their packages their flavanoid content. Furthermore, when cacao is heated it kills up to 90% of these flavanols. Given this information and these facts consumers really have no idea what that content is.

I am not familiar with Lindt, Plamil or Willie’s flavanol content and that is something you may want to consider pursing with those companies.

Cacao beans all have incredible antioxidants, it’s what manufacturers do to them that will determine their potency.

If you visit http://gourmethealthychocolates.com/foodmatters you can watch and listen to David Wolfe explain raw chocolate. David is truly the chocolate expert and I could listen to his message all day long. He is an amazing teacher. Keep in mind that gourmet healthy chocolates are raw cold pressed and have 100% of these beneficial antioxidants; the ORAC score AND flavanol contents are listed on the package so consumers know exactly what they are getting.
